Introducing Gateway Generation 5 (GW5):

The Latest Innovation in Wireless M-Bus Data Collection

29.10.2024 – Articles

We are excited to announce the release of our newest generation gateway, GW5, a Wireless M-Bus gateway designed to revolutionize data collection from wireless M-Bus and OMS compatible meters and sensors. This highly configurable, plug-and-play device offers great performance, flexibility, and security, ensuring seamless operation in a variety of installations. With 4G or LTE-M1 connectivity, GW5 is the ultimate solution for efficient and reliable data transmission.

A Discreet, High-Performance Device

GW5 combines robust functionality with a sleek, discrete design that can operate on either battery or mains power indoors or outdoors. It is purpose-built for maximum performance in urban environments, leveraging the latest technology in radio transceivers. Its high sensitivity and long-range capabilities are made possible by sharp filtering and a low-noise amplifier. Even in environments crowded with RF disturbances from mobile phones, TVs, and other devices, the gateway maintains optimal performance thanks to its high-performance front-end filter.

Advanced Antenna Options for Maximum Range

To ensure flexibility across different installations, GW5 offers multiple antenna options. It supports both internal and external antennas, allowing users to optimize performance based on specific needs. The internal antennas are mounted at 90-degree angles, taking advantage of both horizontal and vertical polarizations to maximize range and minimize signal loss due to multipath issues, especially important inside buildings. For larger areas or long-distance installations, external SMA-interfaces are available to further enhance wireless M-Bus data collection and 4G/LTE CAT-M1 or CAT-1 bis transmission.

Customizable Power Management for Extended Battery Life

One of GW5's standout features is its ability to maximize battery life while ensuring timely data collection. Users can configure parameters such as:

  • The number of active minutes per day.
  • Specific times to start listening for meter data.
  • The days of the week the gateway should be active.
  • Specific times to transmit data to the cloud.

Suppression timers allow users to limit the number of packets stored per meter, further optimizing both battery life and data efficiency.

Remote Firmware Upgrades and Secure Data Filtering

Maintaining the gateway's firmware is simple and secure, as upgrades can be performed remotely using MQTT. Additionally, users can filter data to minimize unnecessary transmissions and memory usage. Filtering options include limiting data collection to specific manufacturers, meter type or meters and restricting message frequency, whether daily, weekly, or hourly.

Seamless Integration with Lansen Repeater for Extended Coverage

GW5 works effortlessly with Lansen repeaters. This integration ensures synchronized operation between battery-powered repeaters and the gateway, maintaining optimal system performance throughout its service life. When used with a Lansen repeater, the GW5 can even extract and append additional routing information, such as the signal quality from the repeater and the number of hops the message took to reach the gateway.

Flexible Configuration and Robust Security

Configuration of GW5 is versatile and user-friendly. Users can easily configure the gateway wirelessly using a Lansen Wireless M-Bus programming dongle, or through remote configuration via MQTT and even locally using an USB-C cable. For added security, a 128-bit AES encryption key can be activated, ensuring that all configuration data is encrypted, and the gateway only accepts encrypted configuration data.

Reliable Data Transmission to the Cloud

GW5 establishes a two-way connection to the cloud using MQTT, ensuring reliable data delivery from meters to the cloud. If the server is temporarily down, data is buffered within the gateway and delivered once the connection is restored. Two operational modes are available:

  • Constant connection (for mains-powered setups): The gateway remains continuously connected to the server, ensuring real-time data transmission and configuration changes.
  • Interval mode (for battery or mains-powered setups): The gateway wakes at predefined intervals to collect and transmit data, optimizing battery life while ensuring accurate readings.

Key Features and summary

  • Seamless integration with Lansen’s battery-powered repeaters for extended coverage.
  • Fully configurable suppression timers, allowing users to control how often data is collected from individual meters or devices.
  • State-of-the-art security with TLS secturity with optional certificates and secure remote configuration.
  • Flexible power options, enabling daily readings for up to 10 years on battery or continuous operation with mains power.
  • Support for up to 2000 meters or sensors, making it ideal for large-scale installations.
  • Transparent meter data delivery (data sent as received from the meter) using MBUS protocol send over the MQTT link.
  • 4G/LTE Cat M1 or Cat 1 bis for fast and reliable data transmission.

GW5 is an advanced, reliable, and secure solution designed to meet the needs of a wide range of applications. Whether you're deploying it in urban environments, challenging indoor installations, or areas with radio shadows, this device ensures seamless, efficient, and long-lasting operation.
